Soft dollars

Soft dollars are research or brokerage services an advisor receives from a broker in exchange for directing client trades to that broker.

The arrangement uses client commission dollars to buy something the advisor would otherwise pay for, which is why it sits inside a defined safe harbor and requires disclosure.
