Cost basis

Cost basis is the original value of an asset for tax purposes, adjusted for events such as reinvested distributions, returns of capital and corporate actions.

Basis is the number that determines the tax bill, and it is also the number most likely to be wrong after assets transfer between custodians. Missing or estimated basis on transferred positions is a routine problem and a poor discovery to make at year end.
